Marks and Spencer has told baffled customers not to toast their ‘Extremely Cheesy' and ‘Extremely Chocolately' hot cross buns in case the ingredients melt and cause a house fire.

The upmarket UK retailer seems to fear that customers who toast buns containing chocolate, caramel or cheese could ruin their household gadgets and set their toasters alight. 

It has disappointed fans of the traditional Easter snacks, as toasting them is the normal way to warm them up. 

M&S advised customers to stick their hot cross buns under the grill on a medium heat.

It also recommends checking the buns regularly while they're under to avoid burning them. 

Customer Phoebe Bailey asked: ‘I feel cheated, my M&S Extremely Chocolatey hot cross buns are "not suitable for toasting in a domestic toaster".

‘How am I supposed to toast them, Marks and Spencer?'.

The retailer replied: ‘Under the grill is the best way!

Just make sure not to have the heat too high and be sure to keep checking them, to avoid them burning! You got this!'.

According to the curious customer, two minutes under the grill hits the sweet spot.

Packaging on M&S' Salted Caramel & Blond Chocolate Hot Cross Buns and Extremely Chocolatey Hot Cross Buns advises toasting the treats.

On the savoury side, customers should take extra caution when toasting any hot cross buns with cheese in for the same reason. This includes M&S' Extremely Cheesy and Marmite Cheese buns.

Food burning inside your toaster will not only smell bad, but could ignite and cause a domestic fire.

The retailer advises grilling your hot cross bun is the best way to get it toasted.

M&S range of hot cross buns cost between £1.65 and £1.75 for a packet of four.
